What is furniture cane?
Cane for chairs and furniture is the peeled bark from the rattan palm. More specifically it is the peeled inner smooth skin just under the rough protective out layer of bark or skin. Short lengths looks a bit like bamboo but cane is solid whereas bamboo is hollow. Unlike bamboo, Rattan cane is a jungle vine that needs the support of other trees to climb upright to reach the sun. It does so with the help of large thorns that grab hold of anything it can in its quest for sunshine. Rattan cane grows in the Indian Archipelago's. Most of the world's rattan that is suitable for furniture making comes from, in order of volume, Indonesia, Borneo, Sulawesi and Sumbawa islands, with a lesser amount coming from the Philippines, Sri Lank, Malaysia and Bangladesh. Rattan grows fast so properly managed it is considered a very sustainable resource.
